Spreadsheet Gasket

Description

As I wasn't particularly interested in doing vector with limited implements again this soon and other projects I have that use Excel would take longer to accomplish, I wondered if I could do something visually interesting with functions and conditional formatting instead.
Little did I know I'd be pushing the spreadsheet program to its limits. Apparently, and to use a peculiar metaphor, Excel has a hair trigger gag reflex regarding the use of scroll bars to navigate files zoomed out to 10%. On account of that, I spent more time lying around frustrated than working on it for a while. Ended up having to kill the program from the Task Manager more times than I care to count. Eventually I figured I should only zoom out to check out results.
Another surprise was the size the files reached: the initial one got to 50 MB at some point. On the off-chance that had something to do with Excel choking on them, I split it. In any case, the combined size of the 11 iterations, ended up being about 140 MB. Now, I have an exercise log file (start here for that minor saga) which has, I would think, similar used cell area and didn't become as large that easily.
In the end, Excel did at least pass with flying colors by my security program.

Part of my exploration involved conditional functions: in this specific case, depending on whether x is larger than y, the smaller number is divided by the larger one, and if x equals y, the numbers are added;  then the formula is propagated recursively. Afterward, it was a question of finding conditional formatting settings that revealed the fractal structure nicely.
