Guanlong wucaii in pencil by dracontes Guanlong wucaii in pencil by dracontes
Disclaimer: Unfortunately, as Science Marches On, this is no longer an accurate depiction of Guanlong wucaii.

So I finally got off my lazy ass and got a ream of printer paper to draw. Not am I only lazy I'm also rather cheap ;)
Now on my computer desk lays a package that contained 500 sheets of paper. I say "contained" because I decided to use one of them to draw this here dinosaur head shot.

Guanlong is, believe it or not, a tyrannosauroid, and makes one think if after all such primitive allosauroids as Monolophosaurus and by kinship all allosauroids aren't just basalmost coelurosaurs.

EDIT: Okay, I freely admit it. I crapped out on this one. However at ~Agahnim's pertinent critique elsewhere and a slightly different outlook on life I decided this could use some reworking and I think this version is much better in all respects. You can gander at the placeholder at this [link] .

You said in your description that as sciene marches on it renders your drawing innacurate. How?

I think my main misgiving with this beside the somewhat botched shading on the eye is that the snout is covered in a thick rhamphotheca, a beak, if you will.
Recent studies like those of Ashley Morhardt and Tobin Hieronymus show that this is most likely not the case, hence my recent restoration of Yutyrannus with patches of scales on the jaws, which would probably be how I would reconstruct Guanlong's face nowadays.

Thank you very much for the compliment and the favourite :)

It's rather tedious really: it's part remembering how shading works in the real world and also trying to get the hang of a relatively common rendering style.
In the former, one figures in ambient light scattered back from the surroundings and also the back-scatter between surfaces of the object of interest itself. For the latter, it's just layering progressively softer pencils for darker tones and being careful when doing so.

I hope the above was intelligible and helpful.

All that you really need is good references and patience to slave over details. Probably the former are a bit hard to come by as far as I've gathered from the work I've seen.

I submit to the allpowerful knowledge of the Dino-art fraternity!

I seriously don't know why I used to think theropods had lips, p[robably a colonial "fetish". In that they used to say that anatosaurus had "lips like a duck".

Well, I still think I was heavy handed in my reconstruction choice here. I need to figure out something that looks more natural, a sort of gradation between feathers, scales and a hard mouth margin.
Don't bate your breath over it though :P
